    Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at firewaterforge@firewaterforgetx.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Choosing the right power hammer depends on many factors.  Every individual blacksmith, artist and knife maker will have their own unique, varied techniques and requirements depending on what material they are working with, what they are producing and what they intend to create.  Their most commonly used stock size, along with the volume of production they require, are important factors for the individual to consider when looking at what power hammer to utilize.

The most typical response is "bigger is better" because what can be done by an adequate hammer can be done more efficiently and consistently when the hammer is not being pushed to its working limits.  If a hammer can move the largest stock you’re working with at its upper limit, and can technically meet your requirements, you should consider purchasing the next larger size hammer to increase performance and reduce wear on the machine.  If production is a primary consideration, what an adequate hammer can accomplish versus what can be accomplished using a slightly larger machine is vast, and the fuel and time it saves more than offsets the initial investment, because each size machine offers a considerable jump in forging power!

Opting for a larger power hammer than you initially think you'll need will give you flexibility in the event you find yourself doing larger projects or using bigger stock, and as you become more proficient with the power hammer, its capabilities will become increasingly more useful over time.  Essentially, if you choose a smaller hammer, you'll be limited to its specific working range and power.  However, by investing in a larger hammer, you gain the versatility to handle a broader range of tasks, effectively covering the functions of a smaller hammer as well.  Hence the common response of go big.

There are many other factors to also consider, such as foundation and placement.  We recommend 6 inches of reinforced concrete slab for mounting machines with bases, where the more industrial two piece designs will require a more robust concrete base to be poured, which can drastically increase installation costs.  You must also consider your available shop or warehouse space, access to single or triple phase 220v power supply, insulation, ventilation and noise considerations.  Your neighbors may not appreciate a massive power hammer in small suburban setting, making a quieter smaller machine more attractive.

The original C41 design was refined by many highly skilled industrial engineers.  These models have seen many improvements and changes since the early to mid-1800’s when the first self-contained, fully cast, mass produced machines were being designed.

As the machines evolved into the classic C41 that blacksmith’s know today, they were improved for industrial use where one worker could work a 8-10 hour shift, step away from that machine, and after a quick condition check, the next worker could step up and run it for another 8-10 hour shift nonstop with very little down time.  This also reduced the need to change tooling, as each machine was setup, in most cases, to perform a single task.

The short Ram, with dual oiling ports, allowed for rapid cooling and extended run time by building in extensive redundancies that gave the machines the durability and power needed to operate under extreme conditions.  They performed ideally in the mass production environment because they didn’t require a lot of tooling changes in a production line.

The long Ram design is more tailored to today's blacksmiths and artisans that need more efficient tooling flexibility and operational space versus sheer volume of production.

We can offer fully customized machines ranging from the classic C41 two piece hammers requiring a poured concrete base to the single body C41 designs with and without stands or bases.

We also offer the newer model C41 design with a longer Ram and increased stroke that provides more power.  These models have the larger cast base and anvils that increase the machines working height and die sizes.  These models also allow for easy die and tooling changes while reducing the chance for damage from a loose die retracing all the way into body of the machine, which was a long-standing issue for smiths using the classic C41’s.  The newer models were designed more with the blacksmith and knife maker in mind.

We offer multiple size hammers: 16kg, 20kg, 25kg, 40kg, 55kg, 75kg and 110kg+.  Additional design customizations and modifications are possible with a consultation.  The hammers come default with three die sets, which can be switched out for alternate dies that better meet your needs.  The die sets provided can be made of medium 1045 or high carbon H13 steel depending on your needs and budget.

We currently offer the standard flat die set, along with two additional die sets (drawing die and knife bevel) for our modern long ram design hammers, included in the price.  This setup will allow most blacksmiths and knife makers the ability to begin work immediately.  With a consultation, the additional die sets can be switched out for alternate dies that better meet your needs.
